The Lynton Focus Dual device used for RF microneedling at LUMOS Clinic

What it is

Fine needles create tiny controlled channels in the skin while delivering radiofrequency energy directly into the deeper layers. Anne uses the Focus Dual by Lynton — the same medical-grade RF microneedling technology trusted by NHS clinics across the UK. The combination triggers a powerful wound-healing and collagen response, doing more than microneedling alone, because the radiofrequency heat reaches where texture and firmness are built.

What it treats

  • Rough or uneven skin texture and enlarged pores
  • Acne scarring and other soft scarring
  • Fine lines and early laxity
  • Overall firmness and skin quality

What to expect

A session takes around 45–75 minutes including numbing cream, which keeps it comfortable. Afterwards the skin is pink and feels warm, a little like mild sunburn, settling over two to three hours.

Results build over weeks as collagen rebuilds, and a course of sessions gives the strongest improvement. Anne will set out a realistic plan for your skin at consultation.

Is it right for me?

RF microneedling suits most skin types and tones, which is one of its strengths. It isn’t suitable during active breakouts or certain skin conditions, and Anne will check this carefully before recommending it.

The evidence

RF microneedling has one of the strongest evidence bases of any non-surgical skin treatment. A 2026 systematic review of 68 clinical studies on radiofrequency microneedling, published in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, concluded that it is "safe, well-tolerated, with credible efficacy across multiple indications and skin types" — including acne scarring, skin laxity, wrinkles and pores. Because the radiofrequency energy is delivered through microneedles directly into the dermis, it stimulates collagen remodelling exactly where it's needed, with minimal impact on the skin surface. The research is clear about the honest limits too: outcomes depend on the treatment protocol and the number of sessions, and most studies report gradual improvement over three to six months rather than overnight change — which is how we set expectations at consultation.

Microneedling: plain vs RF — why we use RF

Both use fine needles to create controlled micro-channels in the skin, triggering a wound-healing and collagen response. The difference is what happens alongside the needles:

  • Plain microneedling uses the needles alone to stimulate collagen. It’s a cheaper entry-level option, but it’s also more painful for the depth of result — and typically needs more sessions to match what RF achieves. Typically the downtime with plain microneedling takes several days to disappear.
  • RF (radiofrequency) microneedling adds targeted radiofrequency heat into the deeper layers as the needles go in. The heat reaches where firmness and texture are built, so it does more per session — better for deeper scarring, looser texture and firming.

At LUMOS we use RF microneedling only (the Focus Dual by Lynton). The radiofrequency component delivers a stronger collagen response than needles alone, and it’s more comfortable than plain microneedling — which is why we don’t offer plain microneedling.

Pricing

RF microneedling sessions start from £295. A course of three sessions, which gives the strongest collagen response, is typically recommended — Anne will confirm the right number for your skin at consultation.

Common questions

Does it hurt?

Numbing cream is applied first, so most people find it very tolerable — a sensation of warmth and light pressure.

How much downtime is there?

Most people experience around 2–3 hours of redness and warmth after treatment. You can return to normal activities the same day.

When will I see results?

Skin often looks fresher within a week or two, with the deeper collagen improvement building over two to three months.
