HIFU and RF microneedling aftercare

By the LUMOS Clinic team · LUMOS Clinic, Basingstoke  |  3 minute read

You've had HIFU or RF microneedling. Both work by triggering your skin to produce new collagen — which means the real results come over weeks, not overnight. Here's the answer in one line: keep it calm, keep it cool, wear SPF, and let the collagen do its job.

Now the detail.

The first 24 hours

  • Don't exercise for 24 hours — sweat and raised heart rate increase inflammation.
  • Don't apply active skincare — no retinol, vitamin C, AHA/BHA acids, or exfoliants. Use gentle cleanser and moisturiser only.
  • Don't wear makeup for 24 hours after RF microneedling (the skin has tiny channels that need to close). HIFU is usually fine for makeup the same day.
  • Avoid heat — no saunas, steam rooms, hot baths, or sunbathing for 48 hours.
  • Don't swim in pools for 7 days — chlorine on healing skin is asking for irritation.

What's normal

  • Redness — mild to moderate, like a sunburn flush. Lasts 1-3 days after HIFU, 1-3 days after RF microneedling.
  • Swelling — mild, 24-48 hours. More common with RF microneedling than HIFU.
  • Warmth — the skin feels warm and sensitive for a day or two, like mild sunburn.
  • Dryness and flaking — both treatments disrupt the skin barrier. Mild flaking for 3-5 days is normal. Use a gentle hydrating moisturiser.
  • Mild tenderness — especially around the jaw and neck with HIFU. Fades within a few days.

Most people return to normal activities the next day. The redness is usually hidden by makeup after 24 hours (HIFU) or 48 hours (RF microneedling).

What to use at home

  • Cleanser: gentle, fragrance-free. We recommend AlumierMD SensiCalm or HydraBoost cleanser.
  • Moisturiser: hydrating and simple. AlumierMD HydraCalm or HydraLight.
  • SPF: SPF 30+ daily, without fail. Treated skin is more sun-sensitive for weeks. This is the single most important thing you can do.
  • Avoid: retinol, acids, exfoliants, and anything "active" for 5-7 days. Ease back in gradually.

When you'll see results

HIFU: some initial tightening at 4 weeks, full results at 3-6 months. The ultrasound energy triggers collagen remodelling that continues for months after the treatment. This is a slow burn — that's normal.

RF microneedling: improvement at 4-6 weeks, with best results after a course of 3-4 sessions spaced 6 weeks apart. Each session builds on the last.

Both treatments work gradually because they're telling your body to build new collagen — and collagen takes months, not days. If you see nothing in the first week, that's expected, not a problem.

Common questions

What should I avoid after HIFU or RF microneedling?

Exercise for 24 hours, heat (saunas, hot baths, sunbathing) for 48 hours, swimming pools for 7 days, active skincare (retinol, acids) for 5-7 days. Wear SPF daily.

How long does redness last?

Mild redness for 1-3 days is normal. Some swelling for 24-48 hours. Most people return to normal the next day.

When will I see results?

HIFU: initial tightening at 1 month, full results at 3-6 months. RF microneedling: improvement at 4-6 weeks, best results after 3-4 sessions. Both work gradually.

Can I wear makeup?

HIFU: usually fine the same day. RF microneedling: wait 24 hours (skin has tiny channels). Mineral makeup is safest.

Is dryness normal?

Yes — both treatments disrupt the skin barrier temporarily. Mild dryness and flaking for 3-5 days is normal. Use gentle moisturiser, avoid exfoliating.

How many sessions will I need?

HIFU: most see results from one session, maintenance yearly. RF microneedling: typically 3-4 sessions, 6 weeks apart, for scarring or deeper concerns.
