What it is

The same intense pulsed light that clears pigment can also target the haemoglobin in tiny visible blood vessels. The light is absorbed by the vessel, heats it, and causes it to close and gradually be reabsorbed — so the thread vein or patch of redness fades from the surface.

What it treats

  • Facial thread veins (broken capillaries) on the cheeks and around the nose
  • Diffuse facial redness
  • Rosacea-type redness (managed, not cured)
  • General high colour and flushing

What to expect

A session is quick — often 15–30 minutes. You’ll feel a warm snap with each pulse. Treated vessels may look slightly darker or more prominent immediately afterwards before fading over the following days to weeks.

A course of sessions usually gives the best, most even result, with redness settling soon after each. As with all IPL, sun protection between sessions matters and Anne will guide you.

Is it right for me?

IPL for vessels suits lighter skin tones and surface-level thread veins and redness. Larger leg veins and deeper vessels need a different approach. Anne will assess honestly and tell you if another route would serve you better.

Pricing

IPL for thread veins and redness starts from £95 per session. A course of two to four sessions is typical for the best result — Anne will give you a clear, realistic plan at consultation.

The evidence

IPL's evidence for facial redness and thread veins comes largely from rosacea and vascular studies. Clinical trials show IPL significantly reduces facial erythema (redness) and visible vessels in rosacea after 3–4 sessions, with improvement in flushing and overall redness scores, and it's an established option in rosacea management guidance. What the research is honest about: IPL treats the small superficial vessels — larger or deeper vessels respond better to vascular lasers, and results take several sessions, with some redness recurring over time as the underlying condition continues.

Common questions

Does it hurt?

A brief warm snap with each pulse — most people tolerate it easily without anaesthetic.

Will the veins come back?

Treated vessels are cleared, but the tendency to form new ones remains, so occasional top-up sessions help maintain the result.

Is there downtime?

Minimal — some short-lived redness or a slight darkening of the vessel before it fades.
