September skin reset: why autumn is the best time to start
By the LUMOS Clinic team · LUMOS Clinic, Basingstoke | 4 minute read
Summer is over. The holidays are done, the routine is coming back, and your skin is showing the evidence. September is when most people look in the mirror and decide to do something about it. Here is why that instinct is right, and what to tackle first.
What summer actually does to your skin
Even with SPF, summer means more UV, more heat, more time outside. The damage builds quietly:
- Brown spots and pigmentation — the biggest one. Sun triggers pigment-producing cells, and the spots take weeks to surface. What you are seeing in September is the finished picture.
- Dull, rough skin — sun and chlorine strip the top layer of moisture and smoothness.
- Dehydration lines — skin that has been sun-dried all summer shows fine lines that are not really wrinkles yet, but will become them if you ignore them.
- Broken capillaries and redness — heat and sun dilate blood vessels, and some stay that way.
None of this is permanent. But it does not go away on its own, and it gets harder to treat the longer it sits.
Why September is the sweet spot
Two reasons, and both matter.
First, the sun. Most skin treatments make your skin temporarily sun-sensitive — IPL, chemical peels, even laser hair removal. From October to March the UK sun is weak enough that you can go about your day without worrying about undoing your results. Start now and your treatment course runs through the safest months of the year.
Second, timing for results. IPL and peels need two to three sessions about a month apart. HIFU and RF microneedling take two to three months for the full collagen-building effect to show. Start in September and you see results by December — just in time for the season that involves photographs.
What to tackle first
Not everything needs doing at once. Here is the order we usually recommend, based on what gives the most visible change for the least risk:
1. Pigmentation and sun spots
If you have new brown spots, uneven patches or areas that have darkened over summer, start here. IPL targets individual spots; chemical peels even out damage across the whole face. Both are best done in the autumn window — this is their season. Read our full guide on what gets rid of sun damage for the detail.
2. Dullness and texture
If your skin looks tired rather than spotty, a course of peels or a Illumifacial will strip the dull layer and bring fresh skin through. This is the quickest visible win — most people see a difference after one session.
3. Lifting and tightening
If your concern is sagging or loss of firmness rather than pigmentation, HIFU and RF microneedling are year-round treatments — they do not require sun avoidance in the same way. But starting in September means the collagen-building results land by December. Read more about whether HIFU actually works and how collagen and HIFU interact.
4. Fine lines and wrinkles
If lines are your priority, anti-wrinkle injections work year-round with no sun restriction. But September is a natural time to reset, and if you are already coming in for pigmentation, it makes sense to address lines at the same consultation. See our guide on baby Botox for what a light approach looks like.
What about breastfeeding?
Some treatments are not suitable while you are breastfeeding — including HIFU, RF microneedling and certain injectables. Others are completely safe. We will tell you honestly what you can do now and what to wait for, so you are not surprised at the consultation. There is no point planning a full treatment course if half of it needs to wait.
If this applies to you, mention it when you book and we will plan around it from the start.
The plan: what a September reset looks like
Here is what a typical autumn treatment plan looks like — not a script, just a starting point we adjust at your consultation:
- Week 1: Free consultation. We look at your skin, talk about what concerns you, and agree a plan.
- Week 2: First IPL or peel session (if pigmentation is the priority).
- Week 6: Second session. Any darkening from the first session has settled.
- Week 10: Third session if needed. Results are visible.
- December: Follow-up. We check the results, plan maintenance, and you go into the festive season with skin you are happy with.
The whole thing runs inside the safe-sun window, and the consultation costs nothing.
Common questions
Why is autumn the best time for skin treatments?
Treated skin is sun-sensitive for several weeks. From October to March the UK sun is weak, so results are safer. Summer sun damage has also fully surfaced by September, so you can see exactly what needs treating.
What should I treat first after summer?
If you have new brown spots or pigmentation, start there — IPL and peels work best in autumn. If your concern is dullness or fine lines, HIFU and RF can be done any time. A free consultation will prioritise for you.
Can I do treatments in summer?
Some can with careful SPF use, but IPL and peels are safest in lower-sun months. If you missed summer, September is your next best window.
How far in advance should I plan for Christmas?
IPL and peels need two to three sessions a month apart, so starting in September gives you a full course before December. HIFU results build over two to three months. September is not early — it is exactly right.
Is there any treatment I should wait for?
If you are breastfeeding, some treatments are not suitable yet. We will tell you honestly what is safe now and what to wait for, so you can plan around it.
