She sat down across from me and said it like a confession: “I shave every single day. Legs, underarms, the lot. I'm just so tired of it.” Thirty-odd years of a razor and still the same routine, morning in, morning out. When she'd finally looked into laser hair removal, every advert promised smooth skin and every forum promised it was permanent — and she didn't trust either of them.

She was right not to, in one respect. Laser hair removal is genuinely brilliant — but only for the right hair on the right skin, and “permanent” is doing a lot of work in those adverts. What laser hair removal actually is

The light targets the pigment inside the hair follicle, heating it enough to slow down and eventually stop regrowth. Over a course of sessions, the follicle produces less and less hair until you're left with smooth skin and, at most, a few stray hairs to catch.

The key word is pigment. IPL needs contrast to work — dark hair against lighter skin. That single fact decides everything about whether laser hair removal is right for you, and it's the first thing I check.

How many sessions, and what it feels like

Because hair grows in cycles, one session is never enough — a course is typically six to eight sessions, spaced a few weeks apart, to catch each hair in its active growth phase. That's the honest commitment, and it matters, because people who “tried laser and it didn't work” almost always stopped before finishing the course.

A session on a typical area takes around 30 minutes. You'll feel a warm snap with each pulse of light — quick and very manageable. Afterward, the treated hair sheds over the next few days, and you can carry on with your day straight away, just avoiding sun on the treated area. Between sessions, shaving is fine; plucking and waxing aren't, because the follicle needs to stay intact for the light to find it.

Who it isn't for

Here's the honest part. Laser hair removal works best on lighter skin tones with darker hair — the light needs pigment contrast to target the follicle. If your hair is grey, white, red or very light, it won't respond well, because there isn't enough pigment for the light to lock onto. And on very dark skin, the light can struggle to tell the follicle apart from the surrounding skin, which carries a higher risk.

That's not a sales objection — it's physics, and I'd rather tell you plainly in a consultation than take your money for a course that won't do the job. If you're not a good candidate, I'll say so and point you at what will actually work. The people who get the best results are the ones who were told the truth up front.
