Chemical peels in Basingstoke — what actually happens.

Whenever I tell someone their options include a chemical peel, they usually flinch a little. The word “chemical” does a lot of the work — it makes people picture red, stripped, raw skin and a week hiding at home. The peel most clinics actually use, and the ones I use here, are nothing like that.

So let me take you through what an AlumierMD peel really involves — what it does, what it costs at LUMOS, what the days after are genuinely like, and the part most websites skip: who it isn’t for.

First, drop the image of dramatic peeling

The strong, aggressive peels you see on TV and social media — the ones where skin comes away in sheets — are a different category of treatment from what we offer. Those need serious downtime and a practitioner who knows exactly what they’re doing with them.

At LUMOS we use medical-grade AlumierMD peels. The exfoliation is gentle and spread out over five to seven days rather than happening all at once. Most people describe it as a light renewal of the skin, not a dramatic peel. You should be able to go about your normal day; you just need to look after your skin a little more carefully for a week.

What a chemical peel actually does

A peel uses an acid, at a controlled strength, to speed up the skin’s natural exfoliation — helping the dull, uneven top layer turn over and revealing fresher skin underneath. Think of it as giving your skin a clear signal to shed what it was going to shed anyway, just faster and more evenly.

Depending on your skin, a peel is a good option for dull, sallow skin, open pores, blackheads, fine lines, acne and uneven tone. For skin with pigmentation or sun damage, I can add TXA (tranexamic acid) to the peel — a targeted ingredient that tackles discolouration for a more even complexion. It isn’t a separate treatment; it’s an option within the AlumierMD range that I choose at consultation if it suits your skin.

What a session involves

A treatment takes around 30–45 minutes. I cleanse and prepare your skin, apply the peel, and talk you through exactly what to expect and what to do at home. Because the product is chosen for your skin, you’ll know before we start whether you’ll leave with an immediate glow or experience a gentler renewal over the next few days.

The face price includes a complimentary aftercare kit — cleanser, moisturiser and SPF to use over the following week. No hidden extras; you won’t be sold skincare at the till that you need to get the result. If you’d like a lighter, hydrating option instead, the Medik8 hydrating facial is £75.

Who a peel isn’t for

Here’s the honest bit. A peel won’t lift or tighten skin the way HIFU or RF microneedling can, and it isn’t the tool for deep lines or sagging. If your main concern is structure and firmness rather than surface texture and tone, a peel is probably the wrong first stop.

Certain skin conditions, active acne you haven’t had checked, or skin that’s irritated or broken mean we pause and look at what’s going on first. And if you’re after dramatic, aggressive results, I’ll tell you honestly that the strong peels aren’t something we do — rather than sell you something that doesn’t fit. That consultation is where this gets decided, and it costs nothing.
